OpenUp, a civic technology NGO based in Cape Town, have created yet another useful tool to enable consumption of the initial Census 2022 top-line results as released by Statistics South Africa.
Gabriella Razzano, director of OpenUp (ex-Code for South Africa), encourages us to explore this tool created by their team "for your immense convenience" which allows the user to explore the Municipal level results on an interactive dashboard here: https://bit.ly/Census22-muni
The Statistician-General of South Africa, Mr Risenga Maluleke released the national Census 2022 results to President Cyril Ramaphosa at a media launch in Pretoria on 10th October 2023.
In the briefing by the Statistician-General the initial results show that South Africa's population in 2022 was 62 million, up from 58 million in 2011. Of some concern, this briefing also highlights a 31% undercount as measured in the post enumeration survey. This release marked South Africa's first ever digital census count as the results were largely collected through an online platform, breaking away from the traditional practice of face to face interviews by fieldworkers with hard copy capture forms.
When considering the widespread use of census data in South Africa that currently informs many decisions, from government budget allocation to where the next hospital, school or fire station is to be located and furthermore underpins many of the large scale research projects conducted annually, it is a question that needs to be addressed to ensure accuracy of the data.

There are fortunately alternative big data sources, and we are encouraged to see that these are starting to be adopted and utilised to adjust, enrich or even replace the unstable census data in SA, and we are encouraging our clients to ensure that they use the best in market data solutions, and best practice in data analytics possible moving forward.
