The Neighbourhood Lifestyle Index or NLI is a multi-dimensional income-based segmentation model which is continually updated by our (partner) Geoterra Image. This model is released as a geo-demographic dataset, and is the result of decades of satellite imagery analysis, remote sensing, and more recently has been honed through artificial intelligence innovations.
As with the old Living Standards Measure (LSM), the NLI provides a lifestyle segmentation ranking of 1 - 10 that ranks households from 1 (low) to 10 (high). The LSM's were derived from the AMPS survey, which was modelled on a sample size of 12,000 twice a year, whereas the NLI is based on actual physical dwelling counts & characteristics derived from satellite images. This means that the NLI effectively is not a database that is modelled from a sample, but is accurate down to the building or feature on the ground.
The data is released at enumerator area (EA) level, and as such is not bound to any suburb boundaries, thus enabling the user to create bespoke predefined areas for the purposes of profiling, such as catchment areas for a retail location.
Below you can see the national profile of the NLI classes of access to services which is indicative of quality of life. The graph is showing for each of the NLI groupings of low - high income levels, the average distance in kilometers of travel required from the household in order to access services such as hospitals, or major shopping centers.
